About Capital B
Capital B is a local and national nonprofit news organization reporting for Black communities across the country that launched in January of 2022. We have local newsrooms in Atlanta and Gary, Indiana, as well as a national news team.
Our Mission
Capital B is an organization dedicated to serving Black audiences vital and trustworthy news and information while growing responsibly and sustainably, and the chief of staff will play a crucial role in ensuring that our staff and executive team are functioning in support of our mission and strategic goals, and doing so in ways that honor the values of our workplace.
Weâre seeking a driven, independent, process-oriented problem-solver to take charge of our operations. The person in this role will be a close advisor and key partner to Capital Bâs executive team, but will not be working in a silo â they should expect to spend much of their time working with different departments of Capital B and interfacing with staffers across the org.

What You'll Do
Thought Partnership + Executive Support
- Serve as a key advisor to the executive team, and a partner with team leads to facilitate cross-organizational planning
- Partner with the executive team on setting organizational goals, and lead on regularly revisiting progress toward OKRs
- Oversee planning and execution of quarterly board meetings
- Manage board development, including creating a process for onboarding of new board members and consistent communication with the Capital B board
- Own behind-the-scenes preparation to make CEO meetings successful, including overseeing research, drafting correspondence and tracking, monitoring, and execution of action items
- Lead ad hoc strategic projects and research, as needed
- Partner with revenue team to help organize occasional special events for partners or funders
- In partnership with development team, work to create systems to track and manage executive travel and availability to maximize potential for funder visits, outreach, and long-term planning
Team Building + Culture
- Lead internal staff communications, working with team leaders to design processes for regularly sharing critical information about organizational direction through a change-management lens
- Plan and execute any large-scale staff gatherings, including virtual monthly all-staff meetings and annual in-person department and all-staff retreats
- Build and own staff information wiki, and maintain employee handbook
- Develop and execute strategies for regular team building, culture maintenance, and positive employee relations in both remote and in-person work environments
General Operations
- Project manage, in partnership with HR, annual review and goal-setting process
- Oversee contract administrative assistant and outsourced IT services
- Oversee fractional finance staff and project manage annual strategic + budget planning process
- Serve as main contact for attorneys on annual charitable registrations and other nonprofit legal matters
- Research, recommend, and maintain new and revised operations policies, procedures, and tools
- Work with team leaders to design and steward streamlined organization-wide systems, processes, and workplace tools
What We're Looking For
- 7+ years of project management, operations, executive assistance or equivalent experience
- An understanding of or deep interest in information needs and storytelling for Black communities
- Excellent organizational skills
- The ability to self-direct and prioritize
- Demonstrated skill at communicating concepts to teams and groups
- Meeting/event planning expertise â facility with slide deck creation and design is a plus!
- Experience with nonprofit boards
- A strategic mind, a listening ear, and the drive to put words, conversation, and ideas into action
- Media/journalism industry or nonprofit experience is a bonus, but not required!
