Chief of Staff — Hunterbrook Media

Hunterbrook Media is a new kind of newsroom. We publish investigative and global reporting with no ads or paywalls. Our mission is to bring visibility to under-covered regions and accountability to under-scrutinized sectors.

We publish across our flagship website, HNTRBRK.com/about-us/. Our journalism and its impact has been featured by dozens of other news outlets ranging from CNBC and Bloomberg to POLITICO and The New Yorker.

We are seeking an experienced, driven, and reliable Chief of Staff. You will play a crucial role in our newsroom and overall company. This includes working closely with our leadership and our team of business journalists, intelligence analysts, and investigative attorneys.

You must be highly organized and responsible, nimble, and able to manage several responsibilities in parallel. You will have significant autonomy over your approach and report directly to the CEO and the Publisher. There is no location requirement, but availability to work in EST hours is preferred.

Key Responsibilities

Newsroom Operations

  • Work as the right hand to our Publisher on newsroom priorities and articles, including project management of our upcoming investigations, features, and multimedia.
  • Rapid response to requests from our Publisher, CEO, General Counsel, Head of Litigation, and newsroom team.
  • Deeply understand our vision and propose exciting growth opportunities.

Business Operations

  • Collaborate with our CEO, external finance/ops team, and HR consultant to support staff operations (payments, accounts, vendors, financials, onboarding/offboarding).
  • Support our CEO, GC, and Head of Litigation on record-keeping, file management, and communications monitoring, as part of our commitment to compliance.
  • Support our CEO and external IT/cybersecurity team on risk management.

Culture & Team

  • Help build our community and contribute to sourcing and recruiting exceptional people — across journalism, media, intelligence, litigation, finance, and tech.
  • Plan team events and help foster a collaborative and inclusive culture to empower everyone on our team, including our worldwide community of freelancers.

Qualifications and Experience

  • At least two years of experience working in operations or startups, with experience in early-stage, growing organizations and news/media/publishing/production preferred.
  • A commitment to the truth and enabling a free and investigative press, recognizing its essential role in governance and a commitment to ensuring accuracy and transparency.
  • Excellent communicator bringing your best to every internal and external interaction.
  • Demonstrate exceptional judgment, with a creative and entrepreneurial mindset. High energy, enthusiasm, and a strong work ethic are crucial to succeed in this dynamic role.

Compensation

The base salary range for this position is $70,000-$100,000 a year depending on qualifications, plus eligibility for a potentially substantial annual discretionary bonus, reflecting the significance of the role within our organization. Specific compensation will depend upon the candidate's skills, experience, qualifications, and level of impact in the role.

Employment Type

This is a full-time position, offering a unique opportunity to support the mission and operations of Hunterbrook Media. We are looking for a candidate who shares our passion for journalism and the vital role it plays in society. If you are ready to contribute to our mission and make a significant impact, we welcome your application.

Benefits for You

  • Unified Vision & Teamwork: Join a new media company where collaboration, growth, and a culture of respect, inclusivity, diversity, and inspiration thrive. Here, you'll engage in the most fulfilling work of your career in an exciting and supportive environment.
  • Extensive Health Benefits: Enjoy comprehensive health coverage, including medical, dental, and vision plans, designed with each employee's unique needs in mind.
  • Flexible Time Off: While this will be an intense job, we prioritize a healthy balance by not setting strict limits on the leave each employee can take, encouraging you to rest as needed.
